Eric Bischoff does not accept Chris Jericho’s claim that AEW has never spent any time worrying about WWE, and pointed at Jericho’s own record to make the case.
Jericho said last week, while promoting his Vietslam documentary, that AEW has never worried about WWE and has never been a WWE-lite, and that the company has only ever concentrated on its own show.
Asked about it on 83 Weeks, Bischoff took it apart while going out of his way to protect the man who said it.
“I think that is the most bulls*** statement. I love Chris. I have nothing but respect for Chris. But that was a bulls*** comment, Chris.”
His evidence was Jericho himself.
“This is the guy that came out and said within six months, AEW is going to overtake WWE. Will Ospreay can’t keep WWE out of his mouth.”
He allowed for one possibility.
“Look, maybe within the last 30 days they’ve made an executive decision and instructed talent not to talk about WWE. Maybe that’s possible.”
But not for the six years before it.
“If you look at the last since 2019, that’s all they freaking do, from Tony Khan to the talent. That’s all they’ve been doing is trying to create an us versus them. We’re the underdogs. We’re going to take over, and they’re evil.”
“I’m surprised he made that statement. Chris is a smart guy, but that wasn’t a smart thing to say.”
Jericho signed with AEW at its launch press conference in January 2019 and became the company’s first World Champion. He re-signed in April this year, after nearly a year off television during which he was widely reported to be heading to WWE.
