Fans turn on Cody Rhodes, Malakai Black wins again on AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam
Malakai Black vs. Cody Rhodes kicked off the second hour of AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam in New York City. This was Rhodes’ first match back since Black defeated him in quick fashion several weeks ago in Jacksonville, FL. Brandi Rhodes made her return to corner her husband during this match.
Match notes written in real-time:
Black got the upper hand at the start as Rhodes regrouped at ringside. Black did his sit down pose in the ring and Brandi got in and sat in front of him while giving him a double middle finger.
Rhodes tried a move off the top rope but Black caught him with a knee strike to the arm. Fans appeared to be turning on Rhodes because he was getting booed and they were cheering Black. Black continued with body shots during the commercial break. After the break, Black hit the spinning kick but Rhodes fell out of the ring. Black made it back to the ring and Black went for the pin but Rhodes got his foot on the bottom rope.
The fans booed as Rhodes got back on offense. Rhodes tried the Cross Rhodes but Black broke free and then tossed Rhodes across the ring. Rhodes hit the Cody Cutter and the Cross Rhodes but Black kicked out. Black sent Rhodes into the ropes but he collided with Arn Anderson. Rhodes took out Black with the pump kick and then went to check on Anderson. Anderson yelled at Rhodes to get back on the match and not to worry about him.
Black sprayed mist in the eyes and then pinned Cody to win the match.
