Juice Robinson’s clean-shaven return was not a carefully planned character shift. It started with a gym accident.
Robinson explained the change on What Happened When with Tony Schiavone, saying his beard had gotten long enough to become a hazard.
“The real reason, because my beard was really, really long, I got it caught in a lat pulldown cable, and it ripped like four out,” Robinson said. “And I got angry and just went home from the gym and just shaved it all off. But then, when I saw it, I was like, ‘Whoa.’ It was a huge change.”
Robinson said he was embarrassed by the incident and that it happened while he was working out during his rehab.
That reaction is what turned an act of frustration into a plan. Robinson decided to lean into it for his comeback.
“So then I knew when I was coming back, I’m like, ‘Oh, I’m taking this down to the skin. I’m getting the razor. I’m going to make it look shocking,'” Robinson said. “So I just wanted it to be a huge, huge change.”
Robinson said pairing the new look with all-black gear was about giving himself room to figure out where the character was headed.
“But my thought, with coming back with all black and kind of being a little more subdued, was just to see how I felt and where the wind took me,” Robinson said. “I knew I would eventually find myself probably to where I am right about now. But I kind of wanted a blank slate.”
The injury that kept him out came on the November 27, 2024 episode of Collision, in his opening Continental Classic match against Will Ospreay. Robinson broke his fibula on what looked like a routine spot, and AEW announced on December 5 that he was out of the tournament, with Komander taking his place. He had surgery and missed roughly seven months.
He returned at All In: Texas on July 12, 2025 at Globe Life Field, entering the men’s Casino Gauntlet at number eleven, clean-shaven and wearing long black tights with a black singlet rather than the bright, loose gear he had worn for years. He got a loud reception and squared off with Ricochet before the Gates of Agony interfered, which brought out Austin and Colten Gunn for their own returns. MJF won the match and the title shot that came with it.
The look was part of a wider reset. Robinson has said since the return that he wanted a more serious character and was done with the comedic side of his previous presentation, and that he had grown frustrated with being seen by some fans as a joke rather than a wrestler. The all-black gear and the shaved head and face were the visual half of that, and his comments on the Schiavone show line up with it: he wanted a blank slate first and worked out the details afterward.
Robinson has been part of the Bang Bang Gang since 2023, alongside Jay White and the Gunns. He came to AEW that year after a long run in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he was a two-time IWGP United States Champion and spent nearly a decade as one of the promotion’s most prominent foreign wrestlers. Before that he worked in WWE’s developmental system as CJ Parker, where he also held the FCW Florida Tag Team Championship.
The beard he shaved had been part of his look for most of that run, going back to his New Japan years, and it is what most fans had known him by.
