Jim Ross calls on all wrestlers to stop knee slapping

This week’s episode of Grilling Jr is a watch-along episode on the July 6, 1998 episode of WCW Monday Nitro. This was the show that was headlined by Hulk Hogan vs. Bill Goldberg and many say this was the peak of WCW.

Conrad Thompson and Jim Ross covered that show and there was also some talk about today’s wrestling.

Here are some highlights:

Jim Ross talked about Dean Malenko: “Anybody that worked with Malenko got better. That’s why I’m so happy to have Dean on our staff at AEW as one of the coaches. He’s an invaluable resource. Dean is battling Parkinson’s and it hasn’t slowed him down a bit. He’s at work and contributing. He’s probably one of the funniest guys behind the scenes of anybody I’ve ever known in the wrestling business.”

Ross mentioned the now often talked about knee slaps in wrestling: “Those knee slaps are killing me. I’m so glad that people are paying attention to the leg slappers. Come on, that’s passe too. It’s like having these tope suicidas in every other match and no one ever wins with it. It’s just a spot. It’s the same category as a side headlock takeover. It’s a spot. It’s not new anymore. And for gosh sakes, fellows, ladies, whoever it may be. Stop the leg slapping, side slapping, ass slapping. Come on. It’s embarrassing to me. I know I’m old school and cranky sometimes, but geez. I don’t get it. I quit calling it. I don’t react well to the leg slapping enhanced audio.”
