On the latest episode of the Grilling JR podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross discussed the current championship structure and the differing presentations of the two men’s world titleholders in WWE.
The Single vs. Dual Champion Debate
Host Conrad Thompson and Jim Ross analyzed the hierarchy of WWE, specifically the existence of two top-tier champions across the Raw and SmackDown brands. Ross expressed skepticism regarding the necessity of multiple world titles within one company.
“I don’t know why they need two champions. That’s just to tease a few guys, I guess. I don’t know. The two champions doesn’t work with me,” Ross stated.
Thompson suggested that the brand split and the two-night format of WrestleMania necessitate separate champions to headline each evening. Ross acknowledged the logistical argument but maintained his stance that it is not essential. “You can make a reason for it… but [is] it necessary? I really don’t,” Ross concluded.
Critique of CM Punk’s Presentation
The discussion addressed recent comments by Kevin Nash regarding CM Punk’s physical presentation as a world champion. Nash had criticized Punk for wrestling in a T-shirt and commented on his physique. Ross defended the Raw champion’s value to the company, citing his in-ring ability and microphone skills.
“It’s a head scratcher to me. Punk is a hell of a hand. He’s a great worker. He can have good matches just about anybody you can think of. He could talk his way into the paydays. So that doesn’t concern me. Quite frankly, it doesn’t bother me a bit,” Ross said.
McIntyre and the “Athlete” Look
Ross contrasted Punk’s presentation with that of the new SmackDown champion, Drew McIntyre. McIntyre recently posted a shirtless photo with his championship belt, highlighting his physical condition. Ross noted that McIntyre fits the traditional athletic archetype preferred in professional wrestling.
“You gotta look like a stud. You gotta look like an athlete. So to me, it’s a pretty simple formula. Everybody can’t have the body that Drew McIntyre has. He’s got a great physique. Trains hard, looks good. So I think it’s good,” Ross observed.
Ross added that while McIntyre represents a specific physical standard, historical figures like Dusty Rhodes drew money without possessing a bodybuilder physique. Ross stated that he understands the preference for an athletic look but does not view it as the sole requirement for a champion.
