Jim Ross talks calling Empty Arena match on Dynamite, calls Moxley and Hager the ‘building blocks’ of AEW

AEW commentator and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross recently commented on calling the ‘Empty Arena’ match between Jake Hager and AEW Champion Jon Moxley. The match itself has been met with high praise from some, with AEW President Tony Khan calling it potentially the best ever. Khan wrote in a tweet before the pre-taped match aired: “The most anticipated match in #AEWDynamite history will also be the most brutal & memorable match we’ve put on TV as @JonMoxley defends the AEW World Title vs. @RealJakeHager No Holds Barred with @JRsBBQ on the call. I believe this will be known as the best empty arena match ever.”

Ross was asked by Grilling Jr co-host Conrad Thompson if he felt daunted about calling the match. “I’ve done them by myself before” JR replied. “Here and there so it’s not a bad thing. The match itself was challenging to call because the uniqueness of A) the environment and B) the rules. So it was just a little daunting there in that regard to try to lay out so I could let the fans hear the natural ambience of the fight.”

Jim Ross would then go into how spectacular the bout itself was. “I thought that Moxley and Hagar were nothing short of spectacular, the toughness that they displayed was just amazing. Taking bumps on concrete freely? They didn’t shy away from it, you know, they’re all over the damn floor. Or they’re hitting guardrails. The best line of the night was someone saying ‘why do we have security railing? There’s nobody here!? Why are there chairs there’s nobody sitting down!?’ But anyway, I admire their [Moxley and Hager’s] effort. I have immensely great pride in watching those two guys do their thing. And they are two of the main building blocks, certainly one could argue in AEW. They’re not the only building blocks, but they’re two of the most significant building blocks that stick out. The AEW Champion Jon Moxley, and the number one contender Jake Hager.”
