Jon Moxley was working on a handshake deal at one point before signing new AEW contract

All Elite Wrestling announced Friday night that its World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley re-signed with the promotion for a five-year deal that carries him through 2027.

Fightful Select reported that several sources indicated that “Moxley had been working at some point without a contract,” but they hadn’t been able to confirm that. When Fightful asked about his contract status throughout the summer, they were told it was “quite a situation,” but AEW would do whatever it took to keep him with the company for the rest of his career.

AEW did note in the announcement that Joxley would exclusively wrestle for AEW and its international partners, including NJPW, which has led to speculation about whether he can do outside bookings as he’s regularly wrestled for GCW, REVOLVER, and NEW. It’s still unclear whether he can work for them, but he will have a title vs. career match with Nick Gage at Saturday’s GCW.

Moxley has helped lead talent meetings following the All Out brawl. Most of the talent they spoke with spoke highly of Moxley’s influence and how much weight his words carried. As announced by AEW, he will expand into coaching and mentoring roles going forward.

Pwinsider.com reported that the word making the rounds, but not confirmed, is that the new deal was signed around the All Out PPV.

The report added, “we are told that at one point, Moxley’s deal actually expired and he worked on a handshake agreement until they finalized the new deal, but there was never any concern internally that he might be looking to go elsewhere.”
