“The Librarian” Leva Bates is the guest on this week’s “AEW Unrestricted” with Aubrey Edwards and Tony Schiavone.
Bates talked about how she once pepper-sprayed Sting and Hulk Hogan in the face, dressing up and wrestling as Britney Spears, how she used her indie wrestling career to fund her K-pop habit, training at The Dudley Boys wrestling schoo, her run as Blue Pants in WWE, being obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, the viral video that landed her a job in AEW and much more.
Here are some highlights:
Leva Bates talked about Cody recruiting her into AEW: “Cody hit me up. He said, ‘We are looking for some celebrity people to do videos and we think you would be a lot of fun if you would do some videos. If you don’t mind, I think that would be a big help for us.’ I thought this would be wonderful publicity for me because right around that time, I felt like my indie bookings were starting to go down and this would help me a lot. I went to a K-Pop concert in Chicago. I pretty much for the last two years used my indie career to pay for my K-Pop habit. I was in Chicago and I said I’m going to find a really cool librarian and film this video. I thought this would be cool PR for Cody, for BTE and especially for me. It took off because a lot of it was fans and indie workers. People seemed to like it and it took off. A month later, I got a text while I was doing a Twitch stream. I looked down and it was Christopher Daniels and Cody. They said their plan worked. I thought, ‘what plan?’ Cody said, ‘You are in. You are the librarian.’
Leva mentioned she performs many backstage duties for AEW: “I am pretty much the CEO coordinator. What does that mean? That means I am Brandi Rhodes’ right hand. Pretty much everything she has her fingers in, I am the one that is cranking it out. We do a lot of PR. We do a lot of charity work and all the chief branding. We are working with [AEW] Heels now. I feel like a gofer girl backstage. I am running around backstage trying to connect the pieces for all the different departments. I’m in charge of the makeup department as well as the seamstress.”
Leva told us the story about getting a phone call from TNA while working as a dancer for Universal Studios: “TNA called and said they would like me to do a little segment for us with Aces and Eights. I said ok. I got there and they said I was going to mace Sting and Hulk Hogan in the face. Eric Bischoff was directing the scene. They said we need you to sign these forms. We took two takes. They had two separate cans of mace. In the first take, the acting was fine but they didn’t get the boys jumping them right. They said they were going to do a second take. They gave me the other can. The first time I sprayed them in the face, it was just water in a mace can. Before the second time, Hogan told me to make sure you really get it in my eyes to look real. I said ok. They gave me the second can. I sprayed him in the face and they jumped him. At the end of the take, Hogan was like, oh my gosh, there was actually pepper spray in that can. Apparently, they didn’t clean out the bottle very well and there was some pepper spray in the can of water. It was diluted, but it was still there and his eyes were burning.”
