Mariah May did an interview on “Close-Up with Renee Paquette.” The full interview, conducted before Mariah’s match with Mina Shirakawa on AEW Dynamite, is up on AEW’s YouTube channel.
Mariah May on slapping her mother in the face at Wembley Stadium:
“My mom was trying to make it about herself. She was there in the front row, trying to squeeze a little tear out. It’s not about her. It’s all about Mariah. AEW is all about Mariah. I don’t care about my family. That’s my private thing. I don’t care about these people. I care about me.”
On if she feels like she has stepped up as champion:
“No, I don’t think I stepped up. I think I’ve always been the workhorse of this division. I’ve had the most matches on Dynamite, for a reason. Everybody loves watching me, and no matter what, you guys can’t seem to dislike me. I could stick a heel in someone’s head and you guys still like me, and here’s a reason for that. So no, I don’t think I stepped up. I think I’ve always been doing the work of a champion unlike other champions on this show. I’ve been on Dynamite. I’ve been on Collision. I’ve been on Rampage. I’ve been here till all hours putting the work in, trying to get on the show. So no, I don’t think I’ve stepped up. I think I’ve always been a champion.”
Her feelings on Mercedes Mone being in AEW:
“I don’t care. Honestly, half the time I don’t know she stepped in here, because, I don’t know if you know this, but she has her own locker room. She says she’s here to help, and she cares so much. So come into our locker room. Come into our tiny, little locker room and help us. Teach us. Share your knowledge from all these years of experience you’ve apparently had, but no, she’s sitting in her locker room. If you care, come and step into the ring with me.”
If she feels slighted that Mercedes is getting more TV time than her:
“Yeah, because I think I’m better.”
If she has any respect for anybody in the locker room or in the industry:
“No, not really. I’ll have respect for you if you can beat me.”
On why she came to AEW:
“I saw Toni Storm falling apart and it all started at Wembley Stadium, which I thought was quite symbolic because I’m British, if you couldn’t tell, and I knew that that was my place to land. I came from Stardom, which had a fantastic women’s division. I thought AEW had a fantastic women’s division. I mean, we have Willow. We have Kris Statlander. We have Mercedes Mone. We have Toni Storm. We have up and comers like Anna Jay. We have Harley Cameron. We have so much entertainment and talent, so that is why I chose to land in AEW because I knew I’ll go straight to the top and I’ll have all these formidable opponents, but where are they? Where are they because I’m waiting. So if any of you girls, or if you didn’t get named and you feel slighted, come on because I’m waiting.”
