Matt Hardy Says Jim Ross Wanted More “Basic Storytelling & Selling” In AEW, Very Grateful To Tony Khan

Matt Hardy recently shared insights into WWE Hall of Famer and AEW commentator Jim Ross’s views on AEW’s in-ring style and his deep appreciation for AEW President Tony Khan.

Speaking on the Extreme Life podcast, Hardy suggested Ross favored a more traditional approach at times. “I think he wanted to get back to some basics in AEW. I think he wanted to get back to more basic storytelling. I think he wanted to get back to a little more basic selling,” Hardy stated.

“AEW was forged ahead with a really high impact style, obviously, and some of that, I think… is stuff that JR would probably perceive as a little too much… ‘we’re not selling enough, even in telling a story, it’s like too much. Let’s tone it back a little bit where it means more.'”

Despite any stylistic preferences, Hardy pointed out Ross’s immense gratitude towards Tony Khan and the formation of AEW.

“He is very grateful to Tony Khan. I think everyone in pro wrestling should be grateful to Tony Khan because he started this alternative promotion which gives all the other men and women an opportunity for someplace else to work,” Hardy explained.

“It gives so many other people in the production side. It gives people on the coaching side. It gives people in every aspect of the industry more opportunities to be employed. So yeah, he is very grateful, and he will never not be grateful. I’m pretty positive about that.”
