NJPW had really big plans for Kenny Omega before he signed with AEW

Jay White’s first IWGP Heavyweight Title defense will be at Madison Square Garden at the ROH/NJPW G1 Supercard show taking place at WrestleMania weekend. He will face the winner of the New Japan Cup.

On Tuesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the plans NJPW had for Kenny Omega before he decided to sign with All Elite Wrestling.

The original main event for the MSG show during WrestleMania weekend was Kazuchika Okada vs. Kenny Omega but that is obviously not happening. Meltzer said the booking of Jay White is what was planned for Omega. Hiroshi Tanahashi was not originally supposed to win the title but they had to put it on him because of the possibility of Omega leaving the company. White’s title win this week was done so they could get things on track with the direction they are going so it looks likely that the main event at MSG will be White vs. Okada.

Tetsuya Naito and Kota Ibusi are possibilities as opponents for White but all signs point to Okada.

Omega confirmed the worst kept secret in wrestling over the weekend by confirming his signing with All Elite Wrestling. He got into a brawl with Chris Jericho that will lead to a match at Double Or Nothing on May 25th in Las Vegas.
