Mercedes Mone’s undefeated streak has been widely discussed among fans since her debut in AEW. The TBS Champion has not lost a match, a creative choice tied directly to plans for the upcoming All-In event.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Mone’s path was carefully considered, especially regarding potential losses. Dave Meltzer noted that Mone was open to a loss to build a future storyline.
“Regarding Mercedes Mone not having lost in AEW since her debut, those close to her say she was willing to lose to Athena to build a rematch at All In,” Meltzer wrote.
However, the long-term booking for All In took precedence. Once the decision was made for Mone to face Toni Storm at the stadium show for the Women’s Title, a loss in the lead-up was no longer logical. This was particularly true for her Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final match against Kris Statlander.
The report also revealed that the original opponent for Mone at All In was not Toni Storm. AEW’s initial plans involved a different top star.
“The original idea months back still involved Mariah May for the stadium show but obviously that was changed when May wasn’t going to sign a new deal, so they wanted to do the biggest match for women in the company on the biggest show,” Meltzer explained.
May joined WWE earlier this month.
