Will Ospreay has said that he’d like to see a former WWE star sign with AEW following their recent in-ring return. Dakota Kai made her return to the ring at the March 8 Pro Wrestling EVE Wrestle Queendom VIII show, wrestling for the first time since her WWE release in May 2025. Now performing under the name Charlie, the former tag team champion’s return was reportedly facilitated in part by Ospreay’s involvement behind the scenes.
When asked by a fan on Twitter if people would be “very happy and like to see” Charlie step foot in an AEW ring, Ospreay shared a one-word response: “Yes.” The endorsement from one of AEW’s top featured stars has immediately sparked speculation that Tony Khan may be looking to bolster the women’s division with the veteran free agent.
A Decorated History in WWE
Charlie’s departure from WWE in May 2025 marked the end of a three-year second run with the company. During that time, she achieved significant success as a member of Damage CTRL alongside IYO SKY, capturing the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships on two occasions. Her history with the company dates back to 2016, and she is also recognized as an inaugural NXT Women’s Tag Team Champion.
Her last match in WWE took place in March 2025, just before her release. During her year-long absence from the ring, Charlie has addressed her mindset, focusing on her physical recovery and preparation for this new chapter on the independent circuit. Her successful outing at Wrestle Queendom VIII proved she is ready for high-level competition once again.
AEW Women’s Division Outlook
The potential addition of Charlie would come at a time of significant growth for the AEW women’s roster. The division has recently seen the establishment of the AEW Women’s World Tag Team Championships, though it is currently navigating Penelope Ford’s injury. Bringing in a seasoned wrestler like the former Dakota Kai could provide much-needed experience to the growing ranks on Dynamite and Collision.
