New details have emerged regarding the confusing situation surrounding Trey Miguel’s sudden departure from AEW. On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez provided an update on the release of the former TNA star, which reportedly occurred just days after he had signed a contract with the promotion.
According to Alvarez, the decision to part ways with Miguel did not originate from the immediate wrestling operations team. “No one’s really saying much. Well, some people are saying certain things, but my understanding is whatever it is, it came from up above,” Alvarez stated. He clarified that the move was not driven by any backstage heat with the roster or ownership, noting, “I know there’s a lot of rumors but it had nothing to do with anybody in AEW talent, anything like that, or Tony (Khan). Something happened from way up and he was released.”
The news comes after a whirlwind weekend for Miguel’s stablemates, The Rascalz. Zachary Wentz, Dezmond Xavier, and Myron Reed officially debuted for the company on Saturday’s episode of AEW Collision, appearing in a backstage segment. Fans were quick to notice Miguel’s absence from the group, which was compounded when he took to social media on Sunday to announce he was “taking a break from wrestling” and asked for privacy.
The situation remains fluid, but Alvarez’s report suggests that the cause for the release is a specific, higher-level issue. “Something happened from way up and he was released,” Alvarez reiterated, leaving the door open for further speculation as to what specifically triggered the decision.
While Miguel was absent from the broadcast, reports indicate he was physically present for the events leading up to his release. According to Dave Meltzer, Miguel was backstage in Phoenix for both the Dynamite and Collision tapings but did not appear on either show. Fightful Select reported that AEW presented a “better offer” than TNA’s attempt to retain the faction, leading Miguel, Wentz, Xavier, and Reed to sign multi-year deals before Miguel’s abrupt release.
