A new report has revealed the backstage reasoning behind the high-stakes tag team match at AEW All In: Texas, which saw The Young Bucks lose their on-screen roles as Executive Vice Presidents.
Ending The Young Bucks’ Authority Figure Storyline
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the match was put together with the primary goal of ending The Young Bucks’ story as television authority figures. According to the report, “The feeling was it had run its course and it was time to get them back to being a great wrestling tag team.”
Alternate Finish And The Bucks’ Input
While the outcome saw Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay win, Meltzer noted that an alternate finish was considered. The idea of Strickland and Ospreay losing, which would have banned them from challenging for the world title for a year, was “absolutely discussed and considered” as a way to build long-term anticipation. The report also added a key detail about the wrestlers’ own input, stating, “We do know The Young Bucks were pretty adamant about losing, but in the end it was going to be Khan’s decision.”
The decision for The Young Bucks to lose had immediate consequences. On the following episode of AEW Dynamite, Matt and Nick Jackson were shown struggling to adapt to life without their executive powers. The victory now allows Swerve Strickland to challenge for the AEW World Championship at any time, though his partner, Will Ospreay, is expected to be out of action for a while after being written off television with an injury angle later in the All In event.
