Samoa Joe, who is currently on hiatus to promote the new season of his Peacock series “Twisted Metal,” has revealed that he suffered a significant injury during the filming of the show.
Samoa Joe Suffered Fractured Ankle Filming ‘Twisted Metal’
Speaking with Mike Johnson of PWInsider, Joe detailed the incident. He explained that after a series of intense driving stunts, a simple misstep on rocky asphalt led to a serious injury that he had to work through for the remainder of the shoot.
“Normally, I would say the ring is always a much more precarious place to be in, but halfway through the season, I fractured my ankle,” Joe said. “It was just parking, and I had to hop out the back on some really rocky, busted-up asphalt. I turned my ankle and spent the rest of the season taping it up and limping through it.”
A Physically Demanding Role
Joe noted how physical the role of ‘Sweet Tooth’ is, but that his long career in professional wrestling prepared him for the demands. “Twisted Metal is incredibly physical — fighting scenes, driving scenes. Anytime that car is driving, you see me in it, it’s me,” he explained.
“It’s a demanding role, but spending enough time in the ring as I have, it’s no new territory.” Season two of “Twisted Metal” premiered on Peacock on July 31.
A Return To AEW Television “Sooner Than Later”
Joe also provided an update on when fans can expect to see him back in an AEW ring. He confirmed that his return will be happening soon, once he is medically cleared.
“Definitely sooner than later. We’re clearing our various medical protocols, and as soon as we’re done with that, we’ll be back to business,” he stated.
Joe was written off of television with a storyline injury at the All In: Texas pay-per-view. After he, Katsuyori Shibata, and Powerhouse Hobbs successfully defended the AEW World Trios Championships, Joe was ambushed by the Death Riders and taken out on a stretcher.
