Tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite ended with a big cliffhanger.
If you missed it, after the contract signing between Hangman Adam Page and Swerve Strickland, the cameras cut to the backstage area and they came up on a group of people attacking Jay White. Earlier in the show, White and MJF had a face-to-face confrontation seemingly setting up a future World Title match.
The closing shot was of someone wearing all black and the “Devil” mask that MJF wore when he returned last September at All Out. As many have pointed out on social media, the body type of the mysterious person does not match MJF but there is plenty of speculation that the identity of the person is of a former WWE Champion.
We don’t know this to be the case, but the consensus among many on X/Twitter is that the masked person is Adam Copeland, aka former WWE star Edge. If that is the case, the timing would make sense because the belief is that his WWE contract was due to expire towards the end of this month and he would likely be free to sign with AEW by now and there have been multiple reports saying that people in WWE expect him to be AEW-bound.
Again, there is no confirmation that this is Edge, and whatever the payoff to this is, it’s clear that the expectation is to build to a big rating or pay-per-view buyrate for whenever this person is revealed.
UPDATE: For what it’s worth, another theory being floated online is that the attacker is Adam Cole and the ankle injury is fake. Britt Baker posted the following photos on social media showing Cole’s ankle.
This guy broke his ankle in 3 places on a freak accident. He still hobbled around on live tv because as we like to say “the show must go on”. @AdamColePro gives his entire heart and soul to pro wrestling. He’s one tough cookie and this is just a small bump in the road. He’ll be… pic.twitter.com/Aya1JWTTvF
