Former WWE ring announcer Tony Chimel has confirmed that his time with AEW has come to an end. Chimel, who had been working with the promotion since last year, revealed his departure during a recent interview.
Speaking to All Axxess Entertainment, Chimel reflected on his experience with the company. He noted the differences between AEW and his longtime home, WWE, specifically highlighting the size of the operation and the culture backstage.
“I always had a good time there,” Chimel said. “They’re a smaller operation, and they run things a little differently, but the people there are nice. I knew a lot of WWE people who are there now. It was a nice little run and I’m very grateful for the time I had there. They do their thing the way they want to do their thing.”
The legendary announcer made headlines earlier this year with comments he made about John Cena. In February, Chimel stated that he believed AEW would have allowed him to participate in Cena’s retirement tour despite his contract status at the time. With his AEW obligations now finished, that potential hurdle has been removed.
Cena’s farewell tour is currently reaching its climax, with his final match scheduled for Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. WWE is currently holding “The Last Time Is Now” tournament to determine Cena’s final opponent, with the quarterfinals set to feature Gunther vs. Carmelo Hayes and Solo Sikoa vs. Penta on Monday Night Raw.
