Roderick Strong said at the AEW Revolution post-show press conference that his goal for the year is to win the AEW World Tag Team Championship with Orange Cassidy, while Tony Khan confirmed the two will not be involved in the Gabe Kidd vs. Darby Allin unsanctioned coffin match on Wednesday’s Dynamite.
Strong and Cassidy teamed together at Revolution alongside Allin in a trios match against The Dogs (David Finlay, Clark Connors, and Gabe Kidd). When asked where he wants to see things go over the next year, Strong pointed directly at the tag team titles.
“I’d love to really give this a chance and go after those tag team titles,” Strong said. “I love tag team wrestling. It’s something that I’ve spent a lot of my time doing in my career, and I think with his awkwardness and my aggressiveness, I think we can do it. So I’d like to see us get those tag team titles and defend them. Poor Orange is going to be really beat up, but we’ll get it done. That’s my goal this year, is to become Tag Team Champion.”
Cassidy spoke highly of Strong and explained why the pairing made sense to him. “Roddy is an extremely well versed and phenomenal professional wrestler. He’s been wrestling for a very, very, very long time. When I was a young person wrestling, I was watching his stuff that he was doing,” Cassidy said. “I don’t have my friends anymore. They’re all gone. So I kind of wanted to get back in the trios, the tag team stuff. And Roddy was kind of floating around. Why would I not want this dude to team with me? Because I feel very, very strongly that him and I together could take it all.”
Their Game Plan at Revolution
Cassidy joked that the duo’s entire strategy for the trios match was built around him absorbing punishment. “His plan was for me to go in and get beat up, and then when they got tired, or their defenses are down, that’s when he was going to spring into action,” Cassidy said. “So basically, our game plan was he’s like, ‘Go in there, get beat up, and I’ll defend you.’ I mean, it did work.”
Strong admitted he was impressed by The Dogs. “We didn’t know what to expect from those guys. I’ve never wrestled against Gabe or David Finlay. I have a little bit against Clark,” Strong said. “They were a lot more than I thought they were going to be. And thank God I came up with that great plan of you just getting your ass kicked.”
When asked how his body was feeling after taking some hard falls during the match, Cassidy responded simply: “Terrible. Thank you for the question.”
Khan Confirms They Will Wrestle on Dynamite but Stay Out of the Coffin Match
Khan confirmed that Cassidy and Strong will wrestle on Wednesday’s Dynamite but made it clear they are banned from the unsanctioned Gabe Kidd vs. Darby Allin coffin match.
“Whatever you do, you guys will not be getting involved in the coffin match. You guys will not be getting involved in the Darby Allin, Gabe Kidd coffin match,” Khan said. “I’m very excited you guys will be wrestling on the show, but those guys are going to settle this one on one. And that goes for both of you, and that goes for Clark and Finlay.”
AEW Dynamite airs Wednesday on TBS.
