Sting made a surprise return to AEW television at the WrestleDream pay-per-view, intervening in the main event “I Quit” match between Jon Moxley and Darby Allin to aid his longtime protege. Following the event, AEW President Tony Khan discussed Sting’s appearance during the post-show media scrum, emphasizing Sting’s continued connection to AEW and his unwavering loyalty to Allin.
Sting’s Connection to AEW and Darby Allin
Tony Khan addressed Sting’s status with the company and the specific circumstances surrounding his return at WrestleDream. “Sting is still part of AEW and a big part of the family,” Khan stated. He noted that while Sting had been away from AEW programming on-screen, he had visited the company off-screen recently in Philadelphia.
Khan explained the rationale for bringing “The Icon” back for the pay-per-view main event. “I had talked to Sting about coming back for something special like this and he was always open to returning to AEW, especially if Darby ever needed anything,” Khan revealed.
An Authentic Bond
Khan highlighted the genuine nature of the relationship between Sting and Darby Allin, stating it goes beyond just an on-screen partnership. “The connection between those two is really special. It’s a real thing,” Khan said. “They built a bond that is really special inside the ring, but also outside the ring, they have a really close bond. Those two are really close. There is no show business at all to it. It’s a really authentic thing.”
Khan further emphasized Sting’s commitment to Allin. “If Darby ever needs anything, we know we can depend on Sting. For him, if there was ever a question Darby would be in trouble, he was not going to hesitate to step in,” he concluded.
Sting’s appearance at WrestleDream marked his second major intervention on Allin’s behalf since retiring, having also appeared at AEW All In 2024 following Allin’s casket match against Jack Perry.
