AEW President Tony Khan recently appeared on the AEW Unrestricted podcast. The head of All Elite Wrestling appeared on the show to discuss the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic and how it has affected the way in which AEW produces its weekly Dynamite show on TNT. One of the topics Khan covered was how the company are presenting the show during this time, with Khan admitting that he has been taking ‘outside’ influence to try and keep Dynamite ahead of the curve and fresh.
“I watched a lot of other programming” Khan began on the podcast. “I watched a lot of wrestling and I watch a lot of other stuff too and try to get a feel for what people were doing with the restrictions and without an audience.”
Khan would elaborate further, discussing how talk shows have helped influence his ideas for Dynamite. “And the thing that really captivated me? I have a really good friend who is a writer for Jimmy Fallon and he works on The Tonight Show. I watched the shows Jimmy Fallon was doing without an audience, and he had his writers and his band in the studio. It is just a small group of people, but their laughter? It made all the difference. And I watched other talk shows where they were just out there kind of cold? And I thought that the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon were really onto something.”
The AEW President would then discuss how that’s the approach he adopted for Dynamite. “And I thought that’s kind of what we wanted to do. So that was like kind of the beginning of the weekend so I was like ‘okay here’s this, this is what we could do with these shows that could be interesting.’ The next day, I was like ‘oh we can have a babyface side and the heel side.’ And then I started to think of it as a rogue’s gallery and like brainstorming on stuff.”
