Veteran wrestler Matt Hardy recently shared his perspective on the AEW World Championship picture, stating his belief that the company needs a change at the top and a fresh narrative direction as of early April 2025. Note: This was recorded before the AEW Dynasty PPV where Moxley retained against Swerve Strickland due to the return of The Young Bucks.
Speaking on his experiences and viewpoint, Hardy was direct about the need for a new titleholder. “I think AEW needs a new champion,” he stated. “I think they need to have a fresh start in going in a new direction.” Hardy suggested Swerve Strickland as a viable option, emphasizing the need for decisiveness and long-term planning: “So, yeah, I would be okay with Swerve winning the title. I just think they need to make a decision, and I think they need someone to win the title soon and have something in mind for what sort of story they want to tell around whoever it is, and have something to run with for a few months.”
Hardy also offered a critique of the current main event angle, presumably involving the reigning champion and associated acts at the time of his comments. “I just feel like the Death Riders thing has almost run its course,” he opined, suggesting the storyline had reached its natural conclusion.
