Kevin Knight could be getting a shot at the AEW World Championship this month.
According to a report from Bryan Alvarez, the plan as of a few days ago called for Kenny Omega to defend the title against Knight in the main event of Redemption. Alvarez shared the update with his subscribers on X.
It would fill a hole AEW created for itself. Omega won the championship from MJF on last week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite, a match that had been expected to headline Redemption before it was moved up to television. Writing in the July 13 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that MJF is believed to have pushed to move the match, and that, while he was not told why, Tony Khan signed off on the change regardless.
The Knight plan also lines up with what Fightful has been reporting. The outlet said this week that Knight could be in line for a significant push, up to and including an AEW World Championship match at Redemption. Fightful separately reported on Wednesday that MJF could be off AEW programming for a stretch.
Knight, the reigning TNT Champion and a member of the Don Callis Family, has already been positioned for this on-screen. During a Don Callis Family segment at Beach Break, Knight said he was due for a title shot and planned to get it once Omega and MJF were finished with each other that night.
AEW Redemption takes place Sunday, July 26 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. Thekla’s defense of the AEW Women’s World Championship against Willow Nightingale remains the only match officially announced for the card.
