WWE Was Reportedly Interested In Recent AEW Talent Signing

Persephone has officially signed with AEW, a move that was announced earlier this week. However, a new report indicates that AEW was not the only major promotion vying for her services. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE had significant interest in the 24-year-old star dating back to last summer.

Meltzer reported that WWE’s interest sparked after her performance at Forbidden Door in London. “WWE was very interested in her since the London match.” In that bout, she represented CMLL in a four-way match for the TBS Championship against Mercedes Mone, Bozilla, and Alex Windsor.

Rise In CMLL

The report details Persephone’s rapid rise over the last year. Originally from El Paso, Texas, she made a name for herself in CMLL and is married to fellow star Villano III Jr. Her resume includes a high-profile match at the NJPW/AEW Tokyo Dome show on January 5, where she competed against Athena, Willow Nightingale, and Momo Watanabe.

Persephone’s breakout moment reportedly came in October during a CMLL World Title match against Mercedes Mone. Meltzer noted, “She turned the corner in October, when she had a legit ****1/4 match in challenging Mone for the CMLL world title on 10/17 which drew 9,500 fans, the largest crowd for an all-women’s pro wrestling show anywhere in the world in many years.”

She followed that performance by winning the CMLL Women’s Grand Prix on October 24, pinning Thekla in the final. She has been out of action for a few weeks due to an injury.
