There are rumors going around about Sinclair Broadcasting (ROH’s parent company) possibly rebranding the Tennis Channel as the American Sports Network. The American Sports Network currently exists as a subchannel on some of their local stations but there have been rumors about a full blown cable channel.
The Tennis Network is cleared in somewhere between 40 to 50 million homes and if they do relaunch it as a full blown sports network then they would need to fill programming time. It will be interesting to see if ROH winds up there.
Meltzer confirmed on Wrestling Observer radio that Sinclair is interested in buying TNA. If Sinclair wants to buy TNA then it might make sense for TNA to move to ASN.
There are said to be a few companies in talks with TNA about majority ownership and one is now emerging as the favorite. If the leading company is able to make the deal with TNA then it would be a face-saving move on TNA’s part. They are said to be offering a significant amount of money. Meltzer noted that the key with the deal would be the value and size of TNA’s tape library. That would make sense for a broadcaster that is looking to fill TV time.
In my view, it would make sense that Sinclair would want programming to fill time on ASN, if they indeed go forward with rebranding the Tennis Channel as ASN. If that’s the case then it turns into something like WCW where a TV company (Turner) owned the wrestling company.
