The stakes have been raised for one of the big matches taking place on the second night of NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 14 weekend.
Chris Jericho’s AEW World Championship will not be on the line when he faces Hiroshi Tanahashi in a few days but Tanahashi suggested last week that he should be able to challenge for the title if he is able to defeat Jericho on January 5th at the Tokyo Dome.
Tanahashi’s mention of the AEW World Championship is a surprise because AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling do not have a working relationship and there have been no signs of them working together since Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks left New Japan in January. In fact, there has been bad blood between both sides.
However, Jericho said that he spoke with Tony Khan and he was able to get permission to put an AEW title shot on the line in the Tokyo Dome. So, if Tanahashi wins then he will challenge Jericho for the title at a later date.
Jericho is working the show at the Tokyo Dome because his contract allows him to work with New Japan Pro Wrestling. It is unclear if this is the start of a working relationship between AEW and NJPW but we could know more in a few days when Jericho vs. Tanahashi happens at the Tokyo Dome.
