Jeff Cobb is back in New Japan Pro-Wrestling, sixteen months after being let out of his contract and three months after WWE released him.
Cobb appeared at Ryogoku Sumo Hall on Sunday, on the final night of the G1 Climax 36, in front of 7,260 people. He turned on the faction he used to belong to within a minute of arriving.
The moment came out of a six-man tag in which United Empire’s Callum Newman, Great-O-Khan and HENARE beat Unbound Company’s Yuto-Ice, OSKAR and Daiki Nagai. Newman pinned Nagai and kept going after the bell, drawing his sword and backing Nagai into a corner. Gedo intervened to stop it, told Newman to calm down, and said he knew someone who could sort his attitude out.
Cobb walked out. Newman, whose stablemate he had been for years, went to him and wanted a show of loyalty to United Empire. Cobb knocked him to the floor with a shoulder tackle instead, then posed alongside Gedo to make himself a member of Unbound Co.

It closes a loop that opened in April 2025. Cobb had been with New Japan since 2017 and was one of the company’s more reliable foreign draws, spending years in United Empire alongside Great-O-Khan and Will Ospreay. He was granted his release while still holding the IWGP Tag Team Championship, which was vacated as a result, and his exit match was against Hiroshi Tanahashi.
He debuted for WWE at Backlash the following month, interfering to help Jacob Fatu retain the United States Championship, and worked there as JC Mateo alongside Solo Sikoa’s group. He held the WWE Tag Team Championship during the run, and was released on May 2 in the same wave of cuts that took Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Tama Tonga. The whole spell lasted eleven months and twenty-two days.
Cobb has been candid about it since. Speaking to Denise Salcedo at WrestleCon over SummerSlam weekend, he said he grew up wanting to work for the company and that getting there did not match the picture he had built of it.
“It’s not everything that I thought it would be, but who am I to complain? It’s not my company,” he said. “But being able to say I was sought after, saying no to them four times and then saying yes on the fifth, it’s a cool little notch on my belt to say that.”
He was more pointed about the repackaging that put him in facepaint.
“When they said switch to facepaint, I was like, did you guys watch the product? I didn’t paint my face in New Japan, but I’ll try.”
“Wrestling in facepaint was really hard. It hurt taking it off. My skin was so bad. It was horrible.”
He was clear that he does not regret the run.
“I had a fun time while I was there. Could things have gone in a better direction? Of course. But my time there, my experiences, I’ll always cherish it.”
His last televised WWE appearance was the April 24 SmackDown, a tag match alongside Tama Tonga against Damian Priest and R-Truth.
Unbound Co. is Gedo’s group and has been one of the more active units in the promotion this year, with Shingo Takagi, Drilla Moloney, Yuto-Ice, OSKAR, Daiki Nagai, Taiji Ishimori and IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Yota Tsuji among its members. Cobb going in against United Empire sets up an obvious first program with Newman, though nothing has been announced.
The tournament itself finished with Ryohei Oiwa beating Yuya Uemura in the final, with both men reaching it for the first time. Oiwa, who graduated from the New Japan dojo in 2021 and had eliminated Newman in the semifinals, now goes on to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at King of Pro-Wrestling in October. Uemura had beaten Tsuji, the current champion, to get there. Shun Skywalker also had his first match since joining the promotion, appearing with House of Torture.
Cobb’s New Japan accomplishments include the NEVER Openweight Championship, the World Television Championship and three IWGP Tag Team Championship reigns with United Empire.
