Title vs. title match booked for NJPW/ROH G1 Supercard show

Ring of Honor Wrestling (ROH) and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) are co-promoting the G1 Supercard event in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on April 6th.

On Saturday morning, the two promotions held their “Honor Rises” Night Two event in Tokyo, Japan’s Korakuen Hall that saw Guerrillas of Destiny regained the IWGP Tag Team Championship by beating EVIL and SANDA.

Later in the show, ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes retained their titles over Juice Robinson and David Finlay in the headliner. After the match, The Briscoes issued a challenge for the Guerrillas of Destiny to face them in a title vs. title bout at G1 Supercard. This led to Tama Tonga and Tanga Loa walking down to the ring where they had a face-off with the Briscoes and accepted the challenge.

As a result, this marks the first non-title vs. title match that doesn’t involve the WWE to be defended inside the Garden since the early 1960s.

Also, this marks the first time that a title vs. title bout has taken place since WWWF Champion Bob Backlund vs. NWA World Champion Harley Race went down in September 1980.

G1 Supercard will air live on pay-per-view via cable and satellite FITE TV for $39.99  as well as on HonorClub and NJPW World.
