We noted on Friday that the television deal between AXS TV and NJPW (New Japan Pro-Wrestling) has come to an end as the promotion announced they will not be airing any TV content in the United States in 2020.
In an update, Dave Meltzer reported in the Daily Update on F4Wonline.com that the agreement ended early as there was still one year left on the deal.
Per the report, AXS had lost interest in promoting a rival company to the company they own. For those who may have forgotten, Anthem Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of Impact Wrestling, acquired a majority interest in HDNet LLC, which is the parent company of AXS TV and HDNet Movies, a few months ago.
Meltzer noted that ratings weren’t an issue in the decision made by AXS.
He added, “It’s not good at all for New Japan, but as soon as AXS let go of all the key people who made the New Japan deal, it was a question of when, not if.”
For fans in the US who want to watch NJPW, you’ll have to sign up for NJPW World.
