Alberto Del Rio on whether Cain Velasquez can succeed in pro wrestling

Alberto Del Rio has sounded off on former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez getting into pro wrestling. After months of expressing his interest in the WWE, the UFC star has decided to step into the squared circle.

He visited the WWE Performance Center down in Orlando Florida where he trained with WWE staff this past Summer.

Velasquez has already signed to appear in popular Mexican promotion AAA. He will debut on Aug. 3 in Mexico City in an event called “TripleMania,” which is the biggest event of the year for the promotion.

Del Rio recently did an interview where he talked about Velasquez’s chances in the pro wrestling business. This is where the former WWE star noted that Velasquez would need to connect with the audience in a different way compared to MMA.

“Velasquez has all the athletic credentials,” Del Rio told MMA Junkie on Thursday. “Wrestling is more difficult than people know, and it’s hard physically, but Cain has the athletic pedigree to do the job in the ring. But in wrestling, you have to have a charisma that connects with the audience in a different way. The promoter can have you go out and lose every single night, but if the audience believes in your character and your personality, you can still become a star anyway.”

“He respects wrestling,” Del Rio said. “He has the right attitude. He is sincere in wanting to learn. Whether that will translate, we don’t know, but he’s doing and saying all the right things.”
