WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield (JBL) delivered exceptionally high praise for Alberto El Patrón (formerly Alberto Del Rio) on the most recent episode of the “Something To Wrestle With” podcast, boldly proclaiming him the “best wrestler in the world today.” This declaration came after JBL witnessed El Patrón’s performance at a recent Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide (AAA) event.
JBL was thoroughly impressed by the AAA Rey de Reyes 2025 show, calling it “one of the best shows that I’ve ever seen, and I mean ever, of any kind.” He singled out the main event match featuring El Patrón against El Hijo del Vikingo for particular acclaim. “The last match they had with Del Rio and El Hijo del Vikingo was one of the best matches I’ve seen this year, this decade. It was absolutely fantastic,” JBL raved. He noted that despite common differences between Lucha Libre and American wrestling styles, such as frequent run-ins, everything in this contest “made sense.”
This stellar performance led JBL to his significant assertion about El Patrón’s current standing in the wrestling world. “That last match they had with Del Rio, he goes by Patron now, was just outstanding,” JBL stated before declaring, “I think that Alberto Patron is the best wrestler in the world today, not in Mexico, not heel, best wrestler in the world today.”
Drawing on his extensive career, JBL justified his claim. “I’ve been in the business for 30-something years. I’ve seen them all and wrestled them all. I called most of his matches in WWE,” he explained. While acknowledging the all-time greats like Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, JBL emphasized El Patrón’s current form: “I don’t know when I’ve ever seen anybody more on top of his game… I’ve never seen anybody better [than El Patrón is right now]. He’s a ring general like you wouldn’t believe, and he is absolutely on top of his game.”
JBL concluded with a strong recommendation for fans: “You’ve got to see him wrestle. He’s that freaking good right now.” His comments position Alberto El Patrón, in JBL’s experienced view, at the absolute peak of the industry as of early 2025.
