John Morrison: CMLL Hair Match Was One Of The Best Matches ‘I’ve Had In Years’

John Morrison detailed his experience competing in a Hair vs. Hair match for CMLL in Mexico City. Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Morrison noted that his recent match against Angel de Oro on February 27, 2026, was a career-defining performance for him. He explained that losing his hair in the middle of Arena Mexico allowed him to feel connected to the industry in a way he hadn’t in quite some time.

“That hair match, I feel like, was one of the best matches I’ve had in years,” Morrison said. “Was the first time in a while that I felt like me again. I wanted to wrestle Phoenix try to take his mask when we met up at AEW for a while, but the timing just didn’t quite work out. And then I started thinking, if I’m going to put my hair on the line, it might ought to be for CMLL since the partnership with AEW.”

The Cultural Significance of Lucha Libre

Morrison specifically chose Mexico for this high-stakes stipulation because of the cultural weight placed on hair and mask matches in Lucha Libre. He noted that the significance of such a sacrifice is greater in Mexico City than in other regions.

“Just culturally, it feels like that is where hair, mask versus career all that stuff really started was Lucha Libre in Mexico,” Morrison explained. “And feel like the significance it has culturally down there is greater than it has in other places. So just started thinking made me think, if I’m going to do this, I should try to do it in Mexico. CMLL, Mexico City Arena Mexico, the oldest most nostalgic Mexican Lucha Libre promotion.”

Physical Aftermath and Head Scars

Following the match, Morrison recounted looking in the mirror for the first time and seeing the physical toll of his career. Without his long hair to cover his scalp, he noticed numerous scars from past matches, including chairs from Sabu and kendo sticks from Sheamus. He also discovered gashes from a recent film shoot where he had been accidentally struck in the head with a prop pay phone.
