Since the premiere of “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” on Netflix, the series has taken the internet by storm with various memes.
It turns out that Joe Exotic, the star of the documentary, had some loose ties with pro wrestling as a few ROH wrestlers took a visit to his Oklahoma zoo.
ROH star Matt Taven recently did an interview with Brian Rowitz of ESPN West Palm where he recalled a story about himself, Jay Lethal and Dalton Castle were seen as possibly being spies by Exotic.
Exotic believed that the group was sent there by Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue. Baskin and Exotic are long-standing rivals, which was heavily covered in the documentary series.
Taven started by recalling how they had a show in Texas and the next day were in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. During the travel between the states, they noticed several billboards promoting 240 exotic tigers with Exotic on it. At that point, he was sold and needed to see what the place was like.
This is when things got weird but he didn’t find out until years later. The strange things started when Lethal told them he was from Tampa when they asked where they were all from.
“Because that ends up being where Big Cat Rescue and Carole Baskin is from. They thought we were some sort of spies instead of some random guys walking in without a family like everybody else to this tiger zoo.
They thought we were some sort of animal activists or spies. I think after they saw our reactions to like, ‘Woah woah, we’re just here to see some tigers. They realized that we had no other intention besides exactly that.”
The rivalry became serious when Exotic was found guilty on two counts of murder-for-hire against Baskin in addition to other charges back in January. Now, Exotic is serving a 22-year prison sentence.
