Discovery Communications and Ring Of Honor have reached a deal to air ROH programming in India. The show will air on the newly-launched DSPORT, a premium sports channel. The channel launched earlier this year and is available in over 70 million homes. It remains to be seen if they can get a big audience to watch the weekly shows but this could turn into a nice stream of revenue for ROH.
Impact Wrestling is currently tapings show in India, in part, because of their lucrative TV deal with Sony SIX. WWE is pushing Jinder Mahal as a top star, in large part, because of the feeling that they can make a lot of money in that part of the world because it’s the second-most populated country in the world and more people in India follow them on social media than anywhere else.
From my understanding, people in India are not used to paying to watch professional wrestling. For example, most of WWE’s programming (Raw/Smackdown/NXT/PPV’s) air on free television. So, it will be interesting to see how they can come up with ways to generate revenue over there. According to a press release sent out in February, DSPORT is part of a sports tier on DTH and Cable in HD and SD.
