Main Event Storyline

Earlier in the year, Andre the Giant defeated Hulk Hogan on The Main Event in the infamous ‘Twin Hebner’ referee angle. Andre gave the title to Ted DiBiase, which was overruled by WWE President Jack Tunney. A tournament was held at WrestleMania which Savage won. Hogan and Savage became friends and formed a team called The Mega Powers. Meanwhile, Andre continued to aid DiBiase and they formed a team called The Mega Bucks. Savage in previous weeks leading up to SummerSlam teased Elizabeth would unveil a secret surprise. Elizabeth did just that, as the bottom half of her dress was ripped off revealing her panties and causing a distraction. Savage hit the flying elbow off the top rope onto DiBiase for the three-count.

Main Event Storyline

Hulk Hogan and Tiny Lister starred in a movie called, “No Holds Barred”. Tiny Lister played the character of Zeus. WWF wanted them to continue their feud from the movie into the WWF. After Lister got the better of Hogan on a Saturday Night’s Main Event, the stage was set for SummerSlam as Hogan would team with Brutus Beefcake to go against Randy Savage and Zeus who were managed by Sherri. With the referee distracted, Hogan hit Zeus with Sherri’s loaded purse, gave him the leg drop, and scored the pinfall for his team.

WWF Championship match: The Ultimate Warrior ( c ) defeated Rick Rude in a Steel Cage match

Main Event Storyline

The Ultimate Warrior and Rick Rude had been feuding with each other for a year and a half going into this match. Their first major match saw Rude win the Intercontinental title from Warrior at WrestleMania V. Warrior regained the title at SummerSlam ‘89. By the time SummerSlam 90 took place, Warrior had won the WWF Title from Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VI. Rude, managed by Bobby Heenan, said that he could defeat Warrior again, this time for the WWF Title at SummerSlam ‘90. It was not to be as Warrior retained the title in a Steel Cage Match.

Hulk Hogan & The Ultimate Warrior defeated Sgt. Slaughter, Col. Mustafa, & Gen. Adnon in a handicap match

Main Event Storyline

With the war in Iraq continuing, the WWF heated up the feud between Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter, who had turned his back on America and sided with Iraq and proclaimed his loyalty to Sadaam Hussein. Slaughter had Gen Adnon as his manager and even teamed up with his long time enemy, The Iron Sheik, now known as Col. Mustafa. For this match, they needed a special referee who could keep them all under control, that being Sid Justice. Hogan and Warrior emerged victorious in the main event.

Main Event Storyline

The 1992 SummerSlam would be the first overseas PPV the WWF would produce. It emanated from London, England at Wembley Stadium. Close to 80,000 fans showed up to see their national hero, Davey Boy Smith, try to capture the Intercontinental Title from his brother-in-law and fellow babyface, Bret Hart. In what will go down as one of the all time great matches in WWF/WWE history, Davey Boy Smith captured the title from Bret Hart to the eruption of the crowd. In later years, Bret would go on to tell the story when talking about Davey’s drug problems, that Davey was so out of it on this day, that there were points in the match where Davey didn’t know where he was and Bret literally carried him in ring move by move.

The Smoking Gunns and Tatanka defeated Bam Bam Bigelow and The Headshrinkers (Fatu & Samu)

WWF Championship match: Lex Luger defeated Yokozuna ( c ) by countout

Main Event Storyline

The feud between Lex Luger and Yokozuna started on July 4th on the USS Intrepid. Yokozuna was issuing a weekly bodyslam challenge. Finally one man, Luger, was able to slam Yokozuna. WWF was turned babyface and represented the United States. They had him tour the country in a bus, stopping in cities and meeting the people. The push for Luger did not turn out to be as big as WWF planned as Luger was not personable at the time in real life and people could sense he was miserable intermingling with the fans. With that in mind, they held off the title change and had him win via countout.

The Undertaker defeated The Undertaker

Main Event Storyline:

Ted DiBiase said he has control of The Undertaker. Paul Bearer was shown with The Undertaker. It led to an Undertaker vs Undertaker match at SummerSlam. The fake Undertaker was Brian Lee, who had been wrestling in SMW. To make the transition into this Undertaker character, he had been growing his hair longer and dying it black. There was some intrigue for seeing the two together, however, once they finally got in the ring for their match, the staredown fell flat. The real Undertaker was several inches taller than him. This would be the first and only time we would see the fake Undertaker.

Main Event Storyline

Not many storylines for the title match. Diesel and Mabel had a few run ins on TV to set up their title match. Mabel turned heel at the prior King of the Ring pay-per-view.

Sycho Sid defeated The British Bulldog

WWF Championship match: Shawn Michaels ( c ) defeated Vader

Main Event Storyline

The story in the match between Shawn Michaels and Vader is Michaels one the match twice, the first time by countout, and the second time by DQ. Both times Vader’s manager, Jim Cornette asked for the match to be restarted as the title could not be one via count out of pinfall. Rather than lose the match but retain the title, Michaels agreed both times to restart the match. He beat Vader with Sweet Chin Music to pin him and hold on to the championship.

Intercontinental Championship match: Steve Austin defeated Owen Hart ( c ) to win the title

WWF Championship match: Bret Hart defeated The Undertaker ( c ) to win the title

Main Event Storyline

Bret Hart was doing the Anti-American/Pro-Canadian storyline heading into SummerSlam. Hart vowed to never wrestle again if he couldn’t win the WWF Title from Undertaker at SummerSlam. Shawn Michaels, who had been feuding with Bret Hart and The Undertaker, was named the special guest referee for the match. Michaels got momentarily bumped which enabled Hart to hit Undertaker in the head with a chair, but was only able to get a two count. Hart started arguing with Michaels when Michaels noticed the chair in the ring. Bret spit at Michaels. Michaels went to hit Hart with the chair, but Hart ducked and it hit Undertaker in the head. With Undertaker out, Hart covered Undertaker and Michaels counted the pinfall. Hart was the new WWF Champion.

The Oddities (Giant Silva, Golga, and Kurrgan) defeated Kaientai (Dick Togo, Men’s Teioh, Sho Funaki, and Taka Michinoku) in a handicap match

Edge & Sable defeated Marc Mero & Jacqueline

Ken Shamrock defeated Owen Hart in a Lion’s Den match

WWF Tag Team Championship match: The New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and Road Dogg) defeated Mankind in a Falls Count Anywhere Handicap match

Intercontinental Championship match: Triple H defeated The Rock ( c ) in a Ladder match to win the title

WWF Championship match: Steve Austin ( c ) defeated The Undertaker in a No DQ match

Main Event Storyline

The main curiosity going into this match was whether Undertaker and Kane were back together and if so, if they would cost Austin the title. Austin won the match. Undertaker then handed Austin the title. However, when Undertaker was making his way up the aisle, he was greeted by Kane. They both turned around to stare at Austin, continuing the story of whether Undertaker and Kane are working together.

WWF Championship Triple Threat match: Mankind defeated Steve Austin ( c ) and Triple H

Main Event Storyline

Several matches over the previous month were held between Mankind and Triple H to determine the number one contender for Steve Austin’s WWF Title. With both winning various matches, they both ended up being named the number one contender, and a triple threat match was signed with Governor Jesse Ventura named special guest referee. Jesse called it down the middle, including counting Triple H’s shoulders down for the count and crown Mick Foley the new champion.

WWF Championship in a Triple Threat match: The Rock ( c ) defeated Triple H & Kurt Angle

Main Event Storyline

Despite Triple H and Kurt Angle being heels, they began to feud with each other, both trying to impress Mr. McMahon. Commission Mick Foley ordered a triple threat match between Triple H, Angle, and Jericho. When Triple H and Angle both pinned Jericho at the same time, Foley named both of them the number one contenders match and scheduled The Rock to defend against the both of them for the WWF Title at SummerSlam. Leading to the ending of the SummerSlam match, both Angle and Triple H were trying to get a hold of a sledgehammer. While this was going on, The Rock threw Angle over the top rope and gave the People’s Elbow to Triple H and pinned him.

WWF Intercontinental Championship match: Edge defeated Lance Storm ( c ) to win the title

The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and D-Von) & Test defeated The APA (Bradshaw & Faarooq) and Spike Dudley

Cruiserweight & Light Heavyweight Championship match: X-Pac (Cruiserweight Champion) defeated Tajiri (Light Heavyweight Champion) to unify the titles

Hardcore Championship match: Rob Van Dam defeated Jeff Hardy in a Ladder match

WWF Tag Team Championship and WCW Tag Team Championship match: Kane & The Undertaker (WCW Tag Team Champion) defeated Diamond Dallas Page & Chris Kanyon (WWF Tag Team Champions) to win the titles

WCW Championship match: The Rock defeated Booker T ( c ) to win the title

Main Event Storyline

WWE had purchased WCW in April of 2001. WWF started to intermingle some of the WCW talent on the roster and various members of both WCW and WCW switched allegiances. This led to The Rock defeating Booker T to win the WCW championship.

WWE Undisputed Championship match: Brock Lesnar defeated The Rock ( c ) to win the title

Main Event Storyline

Brock Lesnar continued to interfere in The Rock’s matches leading to him being named The Rock’s opponent for SummerSlam. Lesnar would defeat the Rock at SummerSlam and became the youngest WWE Champion up to that point in time. The Rock left shortly after to go to Hollywood.

World Tag Team Championship match: La Resistance ( c ) defeated The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray & D-Von)

The Undertaker defeated A-Train

Shane McMahon defeated Eric Bischoff in a Falls Count Anywhere match

United States Championship in a Fatal 4-Way match: Eddie Guerrero ( c ) defeated Chris Benoit, Rhyno, and Tajiri

WWE Championship match: Kurt Angle ( c ) defeated Brock Lesnar

Kane defeated Rob Van Dam in a No Holds Barred match

World Heavyweight Championship match: Triple H ( c ) defeated Goldberg, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton, and Kevin Nash

Main Event Storyline

Goldberg, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton, and Kevin Nash were all picked to be a part of the Elimination Chamber match in which Triple H would defend his World Heavyweight Championship. The participants squared off against each other in singles and tag team matches leading up to the event. The chamber match came down to Triple H and Goldberg. Triple H used the sledgehammer on Goldberg which set up their series of matches.

The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray, D-Von, and Spike) defeated Billy Kidman, Paul London and Rey Mysterio

Kane defeated Matt Hardy in a “Till Death Do Us Part” match

John Cena defeated Booker T

Intercontinental Championship Triple Threat match: Edge ( c ) defeated Batista & Chris Jericho

Kurt Angle defeated Eddie Guerrero

Triple H defeated Eugene

WWE Championship match: John Bradshaw Layfield ( c ) defeated The Undertaker by DQ

World Heavyweight Championship match: Randy Orton defeated Chris Benoit ( c ) to win the title

Main Event Storyline

Triple H lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Chris Benoit at WrestleMania XX and failed to get the title back in several rematches. Triple H was the leader of Evolution which consisted of himself, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, and Batista. Orton won a 20-man Battle Royal to become the number one contender to Benoit’s title. Orton defeated Benoit at SummerSlam to win the title. Benoit extended his hand to Orton in defeat and Orton accepted.The next night on RAW during the Randy Orton celebration, Evolution turned on Orton to start a bloody feud with him and turned Orton babyface in the process.

United States Championship match: Chris Jordan defeated Orlando Jordan ( c ) to win the title

Edge defeated Matt Hardy

Rey Mysterio defeated Eddie Guerrero in a Ladder match

WWE Championship: John Cena ( c ) defeated Chris Jericho

Hulk Hogan defeated Shawn Michaels

Main Event Storyline

Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels defeated Carlito and Kurt Angle on an episode of RAW. After the match, Michaels turned on Hogan by giving him Sweet Chin Music. Michaels challenged Hogan to a match at SummerSlam. Hogan beat Michaels at SummerSlam. Some accused Michaels of being mad at having to do the job for Hogan as evidenced by his “unrealistic overselling” of every move.

Main Event Storyline

Randy Orton was named the number one contender to John Cena’s WWE Championship. Randy Orton would continue to interfere in Cena’s matches leading into the event, often hitting him with the RKO. At SummerSlam, Orton was able to hit the RKO in the match but Cena kicked out and hit an FU on Orton to retain the championship

Intercontinental Championship and Women’s Championship match: Santino Marella & Beth Phoenix defeated Kofi Kingston (Intercontinental Champion) and Mickie James (Women’s Champion) to win both belts

ECW Championship match: Matt Hardy defeated Mark Henry ( c ) by DQ

World Heavyweight Championship match: CM Punk defeated John Bradshaw Layfield

WWE Championship match: Triple H ( c ) defeated Great Khali

The Undertaker defeated Edge in a Hell in a Cell match

Main Event Storyline

Edge defeated Undertaker at One Night Stand to win the vacant title, and as a result, Undertaker had to leave wrestling. Edge’s manager and love interest, Vickie Guerrero were scheduled to get married in July on SmackDown. At the reception, Triple H revealed Edge having an affair with Vickie’s wedding planner, Alicia Fox. Vickie went ballistic and reinstated The Undertaker to take on Edge at SummerSlam in a Hell in a Cell match. The Undertake emerged victorious

Main Event Storyline

The CM Punk-Jeff Hardy feud went back several months. It started when Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank at Extreme Rules on Jeff to win the title. Hardy beat Punk by DQ at The Bash and then finally won the title back at Night of Champions. It became personal when Punk started pushing his Straight Edge lifestyle on the fans and Hardy and verbally ran down Jeff for having drug issues.

Main Storyline

A group of wrestlers from NXT formed The Nexus which was led by Wade Barrett in June demanding a contract from WWE. When they did, they constantly interfered in matches, including costing John Cena the WWE Title at Fatal 4-Way and Money in the Bank. Cena assembled a team and challenged Nexus at SummerSlam. Cena’s team won the elimination match ending when Cena made Barrett tap out to the STF.

Main Event Storyline

CM Punk was the WWE Champion going into Money in the Bank. Punk gave his infamous Pipe Bomb interview leading into Money in the Bank announcing his contract is up at Money in the Bank and would be leaving WWE. Punk promised to win the match and take the title with him. Punk defeated Punk at Money in the Bank and disappeared for a month. In the meantime, Rey Mysterio won the title in a tournament. Cena immediately won the title from Mysterio on the same show as he was granted his rematch. Punk then showed up and announced he is still the champion. We now had two wrestlers laying claim to the WWE Championship. A match was made to unify the titles at SummerSlam. Punk defeated Alberto Del Rio at SummerSlam to win the title, however, Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank on Punk after the match to win the championship.

Main Event Storyline

Triple H was in the role of CEO. He and Lesnar had been feuding all year of Lesnar’s contract. Lesnar broke Triple H’s arm in June. Triple H issued a challenge to Lesnar on several occasions, but each time, Lesnar's manager, Paul Heyman refused. When Lesnar started talking badly about Stephanie McMahon’s children, Stephanie slapped Heyman in the face. At that point, Heyman accepted the challenge for Lesnar to fight Triple H at SummerSlam.

John Cena was able to choose his opponent for SummerSlam. He chose Daniel Bryan. Triple H inserted himself as the referee in the match. Bryan defeated Cena to win the title. They shook hands afterwards. Cena then shook Triple H’s hand and left the ring. Randy Orton came down to cash in his Money in the Bank. Triple H turned heel and attacked Bryan. Orton covered Bryan for the pin as Triple H counted the pinfall.

Main Event Storyline

The main event featured Brock Lesnar vs Randy Orton. It was billed as “15 years in the making”, as they both were trained in OVW, both were brought up to the main roster in the early 2000’s but had never faced each other in WWE. Lesnar defeated Orton in the main event via technical knockout when Lesnar continually rained down elbows to Orton, causing Orton to bleed profusely.

Main Event Storyline

After many altercations between Brock Lesnar, Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns, and Samoa Joe, the main event was made between them at SummerSlam in a Fatal 4-Way match. Lesnar’s manager, Paul Heyman, upped the ante by saying if Brock Lesnar lost the title at SummerSlam, both he and Lesnar would leave the WWE. Lesnar pinned Reigns after hitting him with the F-5.

Lesnar won the Money in the Bank and cashed it in on Rollins at Extreme Rules to regain the championship, getting revenge for when Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank to beat Lesnar at WrestleMania 31.

Main Event Storyline

Braun Strowman was at one point a member of The Wyatt family. After leaving, Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman began feuding. At Money in the Bank, Strowman retained the Universal Championship against Wyatt. They were rematched at Extreme Rules in a cinematic match called Wyatt Swamp Fight. They fought in the swamp, and when Wyatt re-emerged from the swamp, the new character of Bray Wyatt, “The Fiend”, appeared with a new look. They were then matched against each other at SummerSlam where The Fiend won the title.

John Cena returned from Hollywood to challenge Reigns. Reigns went so far as to guarantee that he will beat Cena at SummerSlam, and if he didn’t, he would leave WWE. WWE SummerSlam 2022

WWE SummerSlam, considered to be one of the "big 5" Premium Live Events, airs on Saturday, July 30, 2022 on Peacock and will feature Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defending against Brock Lesnar in the main event. This is being billed as a Last Man Standing Match and the last match ever between Reigns and Lesnar. For weeks, Theory has been teasing cashing in his Money In The Bank briefcase at the conclusion of the main event.
