WWE Hall of Famer and TNA veteran Bully Ray has shared his thoughts on the ongoing crossover storyline that sees the TNA World Heavyweight Championship held by an active NXT superstar. Speaking on Busted Open After Dark, Bully weighed the pros and cons of having NXT’s Trick Williams as the face of the TNA brand.
The conversation centered on the upcoming three-way match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship at the Slammiversary pay-per-view, where champion Trick Williams will defend against TNA mainstays Mike Santana and Joe Hendry. Bully noted the interesting dynamic of the match, stating, “Joe Hendry and Mike don’t like each other, but here’s what they have in common. They need to get that strap off of Trick Williams.”
Bully then offered his candid take on the difficult situation for TNA, suggesting that while having an outsider as champion may be controversial, the extra attention it brings could be beneficial for the company.
“Do you think it’s time for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship to come back to TNA, or do you like it on the shoulder and around the waist of an NXT talent?” he asked. “Let me know right now. I think TNA needs the help. I don’t know what TNA is doing that’s really knocking everybody’s socks off with their own product. It’s good, don’t get me wrong. It’s good, but not enough people see it. If Trick Williams can hold on to that TNA championship, more people will see it, thus giving more credibility to TNA wrestling.”
The high-stakes three-way match for the TNA World Heavyweight Championship is scheduled for TNA’s biggest show of the summer, Slammiversary, on Saturday, July 20. The event will take place at the Verdun Auditorium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
