Kelani Jordan has successfully defended her TNA Knockouts World Championship, defeating Indi Hartwell tonight at the Bound For Glory pay-per-view. The match was Jordan’s first major title defense since winning the championship at the Victory Road event in September.
The road to this championship match was born out of a series of unexpected events. After former champion Ash by Elegance vacated the title due to health concerns, a battle royal was held at Victory Road to determine two contenders for the vacant championship. WWE NXT’s Kelani Jordan and Léi Yǐng Lee were the final two competitors, and Jordan went on to defeat Lee later that night to become the new TNA Knockouts World Champion, with Indi Hartwell serving as the special guest referee.
Hartwell had earned her number one contendership a few weeks prior on an episode of TNA Impact! by winning a three-way match against Jody Threat and Dani Luna. Per the original plan, she was scheduled to face the winner of the Ash by Elegance vs. Masha Slamovich match from Victory Road, but that match was canceled, leading to the series of events that saw Jordan win the title and set up the championship bout at Bound For Glory.
The match at Bound For Glory was a competitive contest, with both women coming close to victory. Hartwell, whose parents took four separate flights to be in attendance, hit a top-rope elbow drop for a near fall. She later connected with her finishing move, the Hurts Donut, but Jordan was too close to the ropes for the referee to make the count.
The finish of the match came when Hartwell was on the top rope. Jordan followed her up and, after being elbowed down, recovered to hit a split-legged moonsault for the pinfall victory, retaining her championship in her first pay-per-view title defense.
