UFC Fight Night 63 took place on April 4, 2015 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia and aired on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
Al Iaquinta (12-3) 6 KOs, 1 Subs & 5 Decision wins. AL is also 4-1 in his last five fights and is also riding a three fight winning streak. He beat Kevin Lee at UFC 169 by unanimous decision, but then lost to Mitch Clarke by second round Brabo choke at UFC 173. He then knocked out Rodrigo Damm in September of 2014 in the third round, Ross Pearson in November in the second round, and then Joe Lauzon at UFC 183 in the second round.
Jorge Masvidal (28-9) 10 KOs, 2 Subs & 16 Decision wins. Masvidal is 4-1 in his last five fights and currently riding a three fight winning streak. He beat Michael Chiesa in July of 2013 by Brabo choke in the second round, but then lost to Rustam Khabilov in November of 2013 by unanimous decision. He then beat Pat Healy at UFC on Fox 11, Daron Cruickshank in July of 2014 and then James Krause at UFC 178 last September all by unanimous decision. That is a big time stat when it comes to his last four fights all went to decision.
Round 1: A slow start to this one. Both fighters exchange leg kicks. AL with a nice body, then head kick combo. Masvidal threw a leg kick, but AL caught it. AL worked some more leg kicks. Masvidal is outclassing him while standing in the pocket. AL just misses a wild right hand. Masvidal with a spinning back kick. AL gets a takedown, he went for a heel hook, but Masvidal pushes off and back to his feet. Masvidal hurts AL with a straight right, it drops AL and finishes the round on top with AL in a pool of his own blood.
Round 2: AL is bleeding pretty good under his right eye. AL tries to get inside of Masvidal ‘s pocket, but Masvidal is doing well to keep the range between the two. AL with a good body combo. Masvidal misses a wild spinning back kick. That cut below AL’s eye is nasty. AL landed a big time right hand, then grabbed Masvidal ‘s left leg and started to land some right hands. AL shot in a takedown, but stuffed.
Round 3: Masvidal threw a body kick, but AL caught it. Masvidal threw it again and landed it. AL faked with a back elbow and Masvidal started landing some jabs. AL tries anything at this point. Masvidal with a body kick. AL went for a sweep, but Masvidal just shoved him off. AL goes at it for the last minute, AL tries to land anything at this point while Masvidal stands in and takes them.
Result: Al Iaquinta def. Jorge Masvidal via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)
