Chad Mendes knocked out Ricardo Lamas in the first round at UFC Fight Night 63 on Saturday afternoon in its main event.
Mendes feels that he is now the number one contender for the Featherweight title.
“Obviously I think I did enough (for a title shot), but I really don’t want to wait for a year to fight again. I only got one fight in the last year, Mendes said at the post-fight presser.
Chad Mendes (16-2) 6 KOs, 2 Subs & 8 Decision wins. Mendes is 5-1 in his last six fights and is coming off a loss to Jose Aldo prior to UFC Fight Night 63. He beat Yaotzin Meza in December of 2012 by 1st round KO, then did the same to Darren Elkins in April of 2013. He finished Clay Guida by punches in the third round during their fight at UFC 164 in August of 2013. He beat Nik Lentz by unanimous decision in December of 2013. In his last fight, he lost to Jose Aldo by unanimous decision at UFC 179 in October of 2014.
“I would hate to only have one fight this year as well. If the fight’s not too far off from making sense, I would take another fight, but ultimately I’m looking to get that belt. This is a dream, a goal of mine and I’m working one fight at a time to get back in there. So it’s whatever the UFC wants.”
Mendes will now wait and see how UFC 189 goes with the Featherweight championship fight between Jose Aldo © vs. Conor McGregor.
