Last night, Conor McGregor made his highly-anticipated return to the UFC’s Octagon. Unfortunately for the Irishman, it didn’t go exactly as planned. McGregor was systematically dispatched by Khabib Nurmagomedov, surprisingly, even in the striking department.
McGregor was knocked down by a wild overhand from Khabib in the second round. “The Notorious” was never really able to get into a rhythm on his feet. In the third round, McGregor seemingly won by avoiding any major takedowns and getting some strikes in.
However, once the fourth round rolled around, things completely leaned in Khabib’s favor. The Russian was able to get the takedown and smother McGregor, eventually locking in a rear-naked choke/neck crank that forced the Irishman to tap out. McGregor was handed his second-ever loss inside the Octagon, and Khabib remains undefeated to retain the lightweight throne.
After the fight, all hell broke loose, as Khabib hopped the Octagon to attack McGregor’s team. Khabib’s teammates then stormed the Octagon to attack McGregor. Once the mayhem settled and the fighters left the arena, McGregor finally broke his silence.
The Irishman took to Twitter early this morning and made his first comments since the loss:
Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.
