A class-action lawsuit against UFC by fighters is expected to be formally announced tomorrow at 1pm PT (4pm ET) in a press conference in San Jose. The story on the lawsuit was originally reported by BloodyElbow.com.
“A news conference to announce legal action by MMA professionals against the UFC. Plaintiffs’ names, news release and other details to be provided during the news conference. ”
Apparently we will know at least some of the fighters involved in the lawsuit by tomorrow. The word is that the lawsuit includes former and current UFC fighters. The suit alledges that UFC has violated antitrust laws by abusing their “market power” to intentionally cripple the free market. I don’t doubt that the new deal announced with Reebok will be mentioned. Sources involved have said that plaintiffs will be looking for hundreds of millions of dollars because of reduced fight purses, video game rights fees, and other sources of income.
A source told Bloody Elbow that the fighters are being represented by three or four large law firms that are renowned for antitrust litigation and have won major antitrust cases against bigger companies. One well known former fighter said, “These are major players. These are not people [the UFC] will be able to out-spend.”
