Jon Jones returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 235 to defend his Light Heavyweight Championship against Anthony Smith.
Jones basically dominated the entire fight in the standing position and on the ground. Smith was cut open and exhausted by the fourth round. With seconds left in the fourth round, Jones nailed Smith with an illegal knee to Smith’s head while Smith had one hand down on the mat. Smith said he wanted to continue so the fight went into the fifth round but referee Herb Dean took 2 points away from Jones.
All three judges scored it 48-44 for Jones.
In the post-fight interview, Jones said this wasn’t his best performance and he gave credit to Smith for being so durable. Joe Rogan asked what is next for Jones. Jones said, “right now, I’m just gonna enjoy this and go back to the drawing board.” He didn’t want to call out anyone and said he just wants to go home to take a shower and he thanked his team and his fiance.
Earlier in the show, Kamaru Usman defeated Tyron Woodley via unanimous decision to become the new UFC Welterweight Champion. Usman dominated the entire fight in the standing position and on the ground. There was no question that he dominated every single minute of every round. The judges scored it 50-44, 50-44 and 50-45 for Usman.
