UFC Fight Night 72 play-by-play results: Bisping vs. Leites

PRELIMINARY CARD (UFC Fight Pass, 10 a.m. ET)

Chris de la Rocha vs. Daniel Omielanczuk

Round 1: Omielanczuk stunned him with a  straight right then followed up with a head kick. Rocha is stunned, Omielanczuk stayed on him. Rocha stunned with a left hook. Omielanczuk with another straight right that put Rocha to the ground and finished this fight.

Result: Daniel Omielanczuk def. Chris de la Rocha via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 0:48

Marcus Brimage vs. Jimmie Rivera

Round 1: Both men ready to take early. Brimage has his hands high when he is covering up. Both men throwing hands early on in this fight Rivera with a big straight right that stunned Brimage. Rivera followed up with another and put Brimage on the ground. Rivera finished him with strikes on the ground.

Result: Jimmie Rivera def. Marcus Brimage by TKO (punches) at 1:29, R1

PRELIMINARY CARD (FOX Sports 1, 11 a.m. ET)

Paul Redmond vs. Robert Whiteford

Round 1: Redmond threw a head kick, but it was caught by Whiteford and tossed him to the ground. Whiteford is tagging Redmond with a right hook. Mid-way through the round, Whiteford is backpedaling while Redmond is the aggressor. Whiteford dropped Redmond with a straight left hand that put him on his back then Whiteford finished him with some strikes to end the fight. Whiteford jumped the fence and went and celebrated with the fans.

Result: Robert Whiteford def. Paul Redmond via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:04

Mickael Lebout vs. Teemu Packalen

Round 1: Packalen went for a takedown early, but stuffed. They clinch, Packalen dragged down Lebout and got on top in half guard. Lebout scrambled and got on top. Lebout landed a series of elbows to the ribs of Packalen. Packalen tries to scramble off his back, but Lebout keeps him grounded. Lebout went for a rolling armbar, btu Packalen reversed and got on top of Lebout. Packalen lands some big elbows while on top.

Round 2: Lebout tosses Packalen to the ground after Packalen looked for a takedown. He let Packalen back up and punished him with some strikes. Packalen is desperately looking for a takedown but just can’t find anything. While on the ground, Lebout landed a knee to the ground Packalen. Back on their feet, Packalen blitzed Lebout with a series of strikes. Packalen landed a double leg takedown into half guard to end the round.

Round 3: Lebout continues his game plan coming into this round and that’s seeking takedowns. Much of the same previous rounds of Lebout controlling the fight with his takedowns and ground and pound once he’s there.

Result: Mickael Lebout def. Teemu Packalen via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Ilir Latifi vs. Hans Stringer

Round 1: Both men worked some leg kicks into the early part of the fight. Latifi with a straight right that put Stringer on his back, Latifi  followed up with a big right coming down to put Stringer to sleep.

Result: ilir Latifi def. Hans Stringer via knockout (punches) – Round 1, 0:56

Paddy Holohan vs. Vaughan Lee

Round 1: Holohan tried to mix up his striking early, but Lee cut him down with a double-leg takedown. Holohan went for a triangle off his back, but Lee slipped out. Lee scrambled to the back of Holohan and locked in rear-naked choke, but can’t finish it to end the round.

Round 2: Lee lands a double-leg takedown to begin the fight. Holohan scrambled to top position and got side control of Lee. Holohan worked him over with strikes to soften up Lee. Holohan attempted an armbar at the end of the round but ran out of time.

Round 3: Lee was kicked in the junk and the fight was paused. Lee milked the five minutes and we all waited. Back to fighting, Holohan landed some big kicks to the ribs of Lee. Holohan mixes his kicks up and keeps Lee off balance. Not a ton of action in this round as Holohan is just throwing kicks to throw kicks.

Result: Paddy Holohan def. Vaughan Lee via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

MAIN CARD (FOX Sports 1, 1 p.m. ET)

Leonardo Mafra vs. Stevie Ray

Round 1: Ray is the aggressor in this round. Ray caught him with a straight right that stunned Mafra. Ray blitzed him with strikes and kicks, but Mafra starts throwing bombs as he back peddles. Ray with a right hook that drops Mafra and finished him with a flurry of punches. The crowd went nuts for this.

Result: Stevie Ray def. Leonardo Mafra via TKO (punches) at 2:30 of R1

Leon Edwards vs. Pawel Pawlak

Round 1: Edwards landed a head kick to start the fight off. Edwards is definitely the faster striker of the two. Edwards with a good combo that leads to Edwards clinching with him up against the fence. Pawlak breaks way after landing a combination of his own. Pawlak shot in on a takedown but stuffed by Edwards.

Round 2: Edwards landed a head kick to begin the round just like round 1, but Pawlak answered with a straight right hand. Edwards with a spinning back kick to the face of Pawlak. Pawlak is trying to fake his level changes, but it’s not getting him far. Edwards with a nice elbow to the jaw of Pawlak then clinches with Pawlak. Moments later, they are separated. Edwards gets a takedown to end the round.

Round 3: Edwards with a sick head kick that floors Pawlak and jumps on him with Edwards. However, Pawlak recovered as he held onto Edwards off his back. Edwards is in half guard on top and works him over strikes. Pawlak scrambled off his back and back to his feet.

Result: Leon Edwards def. Pawel Pawlak via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Joanne Calderwood vs. Cortney Casey

Round 1: Both girls come out swinging for the fences. Crazy pace for these two. Casey landed a straight right that rocked Calderwood, but Calderwood clinched with Casey to recover. Casey pulled guard moments later. Calderwood scrambled and got to her feet. Casey looked for a heel hook, but Calderwood smashed her face in with strikes. The two are throwing big strikes from not only the top but as well as the bottom.

Round 2: Once again both girls come out swinging, Calderwood got a single leg takedown into top position in half guard. Casey got back to her feet of a scramble, Calderwood lands a big right hook that leads to a single leg takedown. Calderwood with some hammer fists from the top. Casey once again scrambled to her feet where she landed a right hook to the jaw of Calderwood. They trade strikes to the bell.

Round 3: Casey is tired coming into this round, Calderwood pressures with strikes then dropped her with a spinning back kick. Calderwood tries to finish her on the ground, but Casey recovered while holding on in the guard. Calderwood let her up, Calderwood pressures her with the clinch and then dragged her down to the ground.

Result: Joanne Calderwood def. Cortney Casey via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

Joseph Duffy vs. Ivan Jorge

Round 1: One minute into the round they finally start to exchange. Jorge clinched with Duffy, but Duffy pushed him off. Duffy with a knee to the ribs of Jorge. Jorge clinched once more with Duffy up against the fence. Jorge with a body lock takedown, but when he got on the ground, Duffy locked in a triangle choke for the win.

Result: Joseph Duffy def. Ivan Jorge via submission (triangle choke) – Round 1, 3:05

Co- Main Event: Evan Dunham vs. Ross Pearson

Round 1: Pearson landed a big straight right hand about one minute into the fight. Dunham looked for a takedown and got it after Pearson put up a fight. Pearson right back to his feet, Dunham stays on him while in the clinch. Dunham with another takedown and transitions into back mount. Dunham works for a choke, but Pearson does a great job defending these. Dunham transitions into side control and locked in a deep armbar. Pearson fought through the pain and got out. Pearson is favoriting the right arm, but still throwing it.

Round 2: Dunham with a nice level change that leads into takedown to begin the round. Dunham works him over with strikes from the top. Pearson scrambled off his back and to his feet, but Dunham landed some big knee shots to the legs of Pearson. Dunham got the back of Pearson and forced him to the ground. Dunham went for an armbar at the end of the round, but ran out of time.

Round 3: Dunham tried back-to-back takedown attempts, but both were shut down by Pearson. Dunham shot in again, but Pearson went for a guillotine choke after stuffing it. Dunham would control the rest of the round and goes the distance.

Result: Evan Dunham def. Ross Pearson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Main Event: Michael Bisping vs. Thales Leites

Round 1: Leites kicked Bisping in the junk to begin the round. Bisping ducked a left hook so he can land his right hook. Good slip and counter. Bisping misses a combo, but finished it with a head kick. With one minute remaining, Bisping landed a single leg takedown. Bisping on top in half guard, works him over with ground and pound. Leites scrambled off his back and to his feet to end the round.

Round 2: Typical Bisping is starting to open up more as the fight goes on. He landed a straight right followed by a head kick. Leites has slowed down compared to the previous round. As the round moves on, Leites is starting to find his range. Bisping landed a big left hook at 1:05 remaining in the round.

Round 3: Leites opened the round with a series of strikes that hurt Bisping. Leties clinches with him on the fence. Bisping pushes him off as he starts to bleed from his left temple. After being kicked so much in the legs by Leties, Bisping starts throw some of his own. Leties got a double leg takedown at 1:01, but Bisping made his way back to his feet. They exchange to the bell.

Round 4: Leties blitzed him with strikes to open the round. Bisping looks like a warrior defending his home country. Bisping is dragged his right leg as he moves due in part to Leites’ leg kicks. Bisping is back peddling and growing tired as this round moves on. Leites went for a takedown, but Bisping shrugged him off.

Round 5: This close fight has entered its final round. Bisping tagged him with two  back-to-back left jabs. Bisping with an uppercut that pops the crowd. Bisping with a right hook then a head kick. Bisping has found new energy as this fight comes to a close. Leites with a good combo that hurts Bisping. Bisping with another combo that Leites shakes his head at. They swung for the fences to close the fight.

Result: Michael Bisping def. Thales Leites via split decision (47-48, 49-46, 48-47)
