Last night, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell made his return to the mixed martial arts cage. Liddell took his first fight since June of 2010, facing longtime rival Tito Ortiz for a trilogy bout under Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions banner.
Ortiz has been a lot more active than Liddell in recent years. Liddell hadn’t fought since 2010 when he was knocked out cold by Rich Franklin in the first round at UFC 115. He decided to retire from MMA competition soon after. Ortiz, however, has been very active in recent years. Since Liddell retired, Ortiz has competed in 9 fights for both the UFC and Bellator.
Earlier this year, the pair signed on to fight for the third time in Golden Boy Promotions’ first-ever MMA event. Liddell had defeated Ortiz via knockout both times they previously fought. This time, Ortiz was able to get the better of “The Iceman.” With just seconds left in the first round, Ortiz unleashed a barrage of punches that rendered Liddell unconscious.
It was Liddell’s fourth-straight knockout loss of his MMA career. Check out the highlights, including the brutal knockout, here:
