AEW Dynamite Match Was a Late Addition to the Show

In the opening contest of this week’s AEW Dynamite, Rey Fenix beat Jeff Jarrett to retain the International Title. During the bout, there was some concern as Fenix was seemingly hurt, although he’s reportedly fine and has been booked in a match on next week’s Dynamite, where he will defend the title against Nick Jackson.

As previously reported, Fenix was not medically cleared until late in the afternoon, and Jackson was not in his usual wrestling gear for his match against Brian Cage and Claudio Castagnoli because he wasn’t expecting to wrestle on Dynamite.

Fenix’s injury scare happened one week after Jon Moxley suffered a concussion when catching Fenix in their match.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that Fenix was injured in a cannonball spot and hurt his back in the Moxley bout.

Meltzer wrote, “At first he wasn’t cleared so Fenix vs. Jeff Jarrett wasn’t scheduled. But after doing physical therapy and an in-ring workout, Dr. Michael Sampson cleared him shortly before the show started so that changed the show as well. The Nick Jackson vs. Brian Cage vs. Claudio Castagnoli match for a shot at Fenix was added about 90 minutes before the show started.”

Original plans called for Nick to be ringside for Matt Jackson’s singles match, but AEW President Tony Khan asked him to wrestle that night. Nick had enough ring gear with him to wear makeshift gear.
