AEW’s first pay-per-view event of the year, Revolution, was a big show for the promotion as it kicked off the company’s new direction ahead of the rebrand on Wednesday’s Dynamite. It also featured Sting’s retirement match.
AEW Tag Team Champions Sting & Darby Allin beat The Young Bucks in Tornado Tag Team Match to retain the titles in the main event while the co-headliner saw World Champion Samoa Joe retain his title over Swerve Strickland and Hangman Page in a triple threat bout.
The show also featured Will Ospreay beating Konosuke Takeshita in what was his first AEW match as a full-time contracted talent. He caught the attention of many people backstage at the show despite working a few matches in the past while under contract with NJPW.
Dave Meltzer noted in a Wrestling Observer Daily Update that “another big thing noted to us was the reaction of the stars from the past to Will Ospreay, and the match with Konosuke Takeshita” as many people there who had been in the business for decades had never seen Ospreay work. It was added, “They couldn’t believe how good he was.”
A lot of former wrestlers were at the show to support Sting. Ospreay is slated to work Kyle Fletcher on Dynamite this week.
