Austin Theory has been pushed as the next top WWE star since his arrival on the main roster for a second time. He had a run as the United States Champion, won the Money in the Bank briefcase, and was aligned with Vince McMahon on television.
When Vince resigned from the company, and Triple H took over creative, some fans thought Theory was losing his push as he started to lose matches. He also came up short when he cashed in his MITB briefcase against United States Champion Seth Rollins.
Theory has since changed his character, which has more edge than his previous gimmick.
While speaking to City News Ottawa, Theory explained that he thought his old character had a ceiling to it and wasn’t on the same level as Roman Reigns.
“The cocky, arrogant, douchy persona just really gets under people’s skin, and it did its purpose. And having the Money in the Bank contract and the way that character was, there’s a little bit of a ceiling there just because when you look at Roman Reigns being so unstoppable and everything.”
Theory continued by noting that whoever will beat Reigns needs to be a worthy guy, not someone who beat him by luck.
“I think the chapter that Austin Theory is headed now is setting him up to build to being that qualifier to stand toe to toe with Roman Reigns.”
Theory won back the United States Title at WWE Survivor Series WarGames in a triple threat that included Rollins and Bobby Lashley.
