Backstage AEW Reaction to the News of Cash Wheeler’s Arrest

The legal situation that AEW World Tag Team Champion Cash Wheeler, real name Daniel Wheeler, is dealing with was kept under wraps for the last few weeks until Friday when he turned himself in to be arrested and faced his first court hearing in regards to being charged for one count of aggravated assault with a firearm.

The incident happened on July 27th when there was a road rage incident where the victim alleged Wheeler flashed a firearm at them. A warrant was issued for Wheeler the following day. He was released on a $2,500 bond and had to surrender all his weapons to the authorities.

As previously reported, FTR will be appearing on tonight’s episode of AEW Collision.

Nick Hausman, who has broken past stories, reported on Haus of Wrestling that they’ve yet to hear from anyone in AEW who knew of the news before it came out on Friday. This “includes several notable AEW roster members and top members of management.”

It’s unclear whether AEW President Tony Khan, CM Punk, or Wheeler’s tag team partner, Dax Harwood, knew what would happen on Friday. They were given the impression by one source that Khan didn’t know, but they’ve not been able to confirm that.

Hausman broke the news in two situations to “members of upper management, who seemed completely unaware of what was unfolding.”

FTR’s AEW Tag Team Title defense against The Young Bucks later this month at All In is still scheduled as Wheeler didn’t surrender his passport.
