Backstage news on CM Punk’s initial reaction to AEW release

CM Punk is seemingly on cloud nine now that he’s back in WWE following his AEW departure months ago.

The departure

AEW terminated Punk following a quickly developed discipline committee that included Bryan Danielson and two attorneys. However, Danielson did not make the decision to fire Punk. Rather, that was a decision ultimately made by AEW President Tony Khan.

The departure was following his physical altercation with Jack Perry at All In. Samoa Joe is the last man to have wrestled Punk in AEW as they worked that show. Punk also famously had a backstage brawl with The Elite at All Out 2022.

As previously reported, Punk signed an NDA and is not legally allowed to discuss his AEW departure and some people in the promotion. Khan is also not legally allowed to say anything, something he has publicly confirmed.

The reaction

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed how Punk reacted to the news of his release before returning to WWE, something he reached out to the company about ten days before Survivor Series to see if they would be interested in. He had previously traveled to Raw in Chicago earlier this year, where he was backstage for a few minutes, trying to talk with Triple H and making amends with The Miz.

“I know he was not that upset when he was fired. I was told he was not looking to be fired, but he was not all that upset about being fired,” Meltzer stated.
