The relationship between AEW and CM Punk has only worsened after Colt Cabana returned to TV in recent weeks.
Cabana and Punk’s friendship went sour after now-former WWE doctor Chris Amann sued them over Punk’s comments about him in his interview on Cabana’s podcast. After the lawsuit, they later sued each other, as Cabana claimed that Punk told him he would cover all of his legal bills only to go back on his word.
Cabana disappeared from television shortly after Punk arrived in AEW last year, which led to speculation that Punk was involved in AEW’s initial decision not to renew Cabana’s contract earlier this year. The locker room went to bat for Cabana, and he was sent to the ROH brand.
Punk went off on Cabana during the AEW All Out media scrum as well as The Elite and Hangman Page. With Punk suspended and recovering from surgery, AEW brought back Cabana on the November 2 episode of Dynamite, where he challenged Chris Jericho for the ROH World Championship. This comes at a time when Punk is reportedly in talks with the promotion over a contract buyout.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that “Colt Cabana wrestling Chris Jericho only made things worse as far as issues with the two sides. Punk remains adamant he had nothing to do with Cabana being gone.”
Meltzer continued by noting that a lot of talent believes and insists differently and it’s openly talked about. As of this writing, there’s been no change in Punk’s contract situation as the promotion is still selling his merchandise and he remains under contract.
